The Three Habits of Self-Care

Self-care is a huge topic in our world today, and this is a wonderful development which has come along recently. Increasingly so, more of us are asking the question: “How do I thrive? How can I do more than just survive and get by?” This is where self-care comes to center stage.

You are a human being of infinite and intrinsic worth, and that means that you matter. And, because you matter, it’s crucial to learn how to care for yourself well, and that means caring for your whole being. If you can intentionally add habits that support you, then you will absolutely have a better life. When you look back at how you spent your time on a given day, week, or month, you should have spent time caring for yourself in these distinct ways, check them out below!

And, if you feel confident about how you’re caring for your physical body, your mental clarity, and your relationships, then you may be ready to grow in some additional areas of your life. But, this is really important: You need to be in a good place with the first three areas of your life before you can move on to these last two. The reason that I call growth and generosity habits “bonus types of self-care” is because you aren’t ready to take on these challenges until you get the basics right. If you’re physically wasting away, mentally scatterbrained, and relationally overwhelmed or lonely, you will only worsen your issues by trying to do more.

So, once you are practicing the first three types of self-care well, try adding in these two types of self-care to continue your personal growth.

While this is not a perfect plan for how to care for yourself, intentionally improving yourself in these three core areas can dramatically improve your life. And, if you have the bandwidth to also be growing and challenging yourself, and serving others with your time and energy, you will certainly be mentally healthier for it.

None of us will achieve perfect self-care or mental health as long as we’re on Earth, but if you follow a comprehensive plan like this and structure your life in such a way that works for you, you can enjoy your life to the fullest, and help others along their way too.
